The Spring and Summer months are the perfect time to enjoy a refreshing gin cocktail. Something about a delicious gin cocktail and a warm breeze just makes sense!
You are going to learn how to make an original Sweet Recipe that I have created. Not only is this gin cocktail EASY to make, it’s also one you can easily teach your friends!
Who doesn’t like to add a new and unique cocktail to their secret repertoire am I right?
This post will show you everything you need to serve up a refreshing gin cocktail like a pro! I call this:
“You got everything that I like”
What You Will Need
Gin :
The Gin I use for this cocktail recipe is Venus Gin No. 01. I luckily used to live in Santa Cruz California where this gin was distilled locally. Amazingly it is available in most Total Wine and More stores throughout California! This gin has notes of citrus, lavender, ginger, lemon, and juniper. If you want to read more about this distillery and this gin just click HERE!
If you cannot find Venus Gin No. 01 that is OKAY. I will give you a few other alternatives that should be readily available!
- The Botanist
- Citadelle Jardin D’ete Gin
- Gray Whale
- Haymans Old Tom Gin ( You will taste less juniper here, but it will remain smooth )
- I do also have to say Venus Spirits carries an Aquavit No. 01 that if you can ever get your hands on, definitely try it in this!!!
Citrus:
Citrus adds such a tart and fresh aspect to cocktails! I ALWAYS suggest you try using fresh fruit juice. I promise once you taste the difference you will never be able to turn back to the dark days of shelf bought juices! It really takes your cocktail to the next level. The citrus we are going to use in this refreshing gin cocktail is lime juice. You will need approximately 1 1/2 medium sized limes.
In the photo above I am using a hand press stainless steel citrus juicer! I LOVE these things. I was also surprised when I purchased my own that I could get it for just under $30 which really came as a surprise and a relief at the same time! I know how it is buying new bar equipment and you just never know!
As you can see it has a distinct pour spout AND you can fit multiple pieces of citrus inside of it at once. You are more than welcome to use a smaller citrus juicer if you would like but if you want one just like mine you can purchase it off of Amazon right HERE.
If you want to make a large amount of Lime Juice for storage I would recommend getting a glass bottle with a pour spout like the one I have pictured above. You can then label and date your juices and store them in your fridge! The pour spout really gives you that smooth and precise pour when you are making your build. Check out this set on Amazon that you can purchase that comes with labels and spouts right HERE!
*Store your Lime Juice for no longer than 5 days from labeled date*
Rosemary Simple Syrup:
Okay so Simple Syrup really lives up to it’s title of being SIMPLE. I’m talking really elementary stuff right here so I know you will all be able to make it with EASE. The ratio is 1:1. You will be using 1 part white sugar, to 1 part water. You can go as big with this or as small with this as you want! You want a huge batch? Go ahead and use 4 cups of white sugar and 4 cups of water. You want something for just a few drinks? Go ahead and and use 1 cup of white sugar with 1 cup of water.
With Simple Syrup you will want to get a pot going on the stove. You will add the water and the sugar into your pot. You never want the syrup to boil, you just want it to simmer so make sure you do not have the heat all the way up. Where does the Rosemary come in? Right here! Add in your desired amount of fresh rosemary like in the picture below. Stir it while maintaining that slow simmer. The amount of Rosemary you add will truly depend on how much simple syrup you are making.
In this photo I used only 1/2 Cup White Sugar to 1/2 Cup Water. For that amount I used about 3 large Sprigs of Rosemary which was perfect. Feel free to multiply that amount if you make a larger batch for yourself!
Once your syrup has thickened in texture and your kitchen is filled with that beautiful aroma go ahead and remove your pot from the stove onto a cooler surface. Let your syrup rest untouched for about 30 minutes. After those 30 minutes, strain out your rosemary pieces using a cocktail strainer into a container of your choice! Voila you did it! A delicious Rosemary Simple Syrup created by YOU. If you want a cocktail strainer just like mine below check it out on Amazon right HERE!
Fill:
The Fill thats used in this refreshing gin cocktail is Fever Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit. You can find this at Bevmo, Total Wine and More, Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart! This flavor of fever tree is DELICIOUS and I use it in quite a few of my original cocktails.
The Fever Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit compliments all of the components of the drink and adds that refreshing, delicious, and light sparkle on the tip of your tongue. On a warm Summer or Spring day this will hit the spot!
Bar Supplies :
Alright lets talk bar supplies you will need for this gin cocktail!
First off you will want a cocktail shaker! I highly prefer the Boston Shakers. I feel that they have a better range of shake and give me the proper dilution I am personally looking for. I use them in every single one of my cocktails and I have only used them as a bartender! Get your own set right HERE on Amazon.
Along with that Boston Shaker you will need a Hawthorne Strainer. After you shake your cocktail you will strain it through your Hawthorne Strainer which will stop all of that ice from entering your glassware! If you want your own, check it out on Amazon right HERE.
Next you will want to make sure you have a Bar Jigger so you are making the proper measurements for the recipe! This one HERE on amazon is identical to the one I have. If this one is a little too tricky to use, I will link another right HERE that is made for beginners. It is important for the balance of your cocktail to make sure you are using the proper measurement so use whatever one you are comfortable with!
You will also be needing a Fine Cocktail Strainer! I have one linked above in the Rosemary Simple Syrup section! If for some reason you are in a pinch you may use any sort of fine mesh strainer. What you are mainly trying to do for this recipe is make sure no Rosemary debris enters your Syrup after straining. We want ALL the flavor and none of that excess.
Glassware. For this specific gin cocktail we are using a Stemless Wine Glass. Now, you can get these pretty much ANYWHERE. Honestly, I get a lot of my glassware from goodwill which is not only a money saver but you would be surprised at all the cool and unique finds you will stumble upon in there! Target, Walmart, and Bed Bath and Beyond will have Stemless Wine Glasses as well. If you want to get them off of amazon you can check them out right HERE!
I also must mention that you will need ICE. Lots of people have fridges with an ice dispenser which is perfect for you to use. Alas, if you do not have accessible fridge Ice, AKA ME, you will have to freeze your own! As you see above I use a silicone perfect ice cube tray. I will link an identical one that comes with a LID right HERE! I am lucky enough to have a cocktail store near me as well that carries perfect ice in every size but that is not always the most affordable option. I would still recommend you check if any such stores exist near your location! Although a little more pricey, definitely worth it in quality!!!
I do recommend that if you are starting to create multiple cocktails at home, you should invest in your own personal little Bartending Kit. Most come with everything you will need as a beginner while others provide several items for more complex creations. I will put links to both a beginners set, and a more advanced set on Amazon below!
