This post is going to show you how to make a delicious Hot Buttered Rum Recipe using Fresh Persimmons!
Who doesn’t like a hot cocktail during the holiday season?! Something about rum, butter, and a warm cup just makes so much sense. I’ve usually been a hot toddy lover for most of my life, but I’ve recently seen the magic in a great cup of hot buttered rum. This is an original Sweet Recipe of mine that introduces some fresh persimmons into the mix! I have a couple of persimmon trees I found deep in my back yard out here in San Diego and the first thing I wanted to do was get them into a cocktail! Their sweetness and custard like texture made me immediately want to turn them into a hot and spiced holiday drink. I will show you exactly how to make the hot buttered rum base and the cocktail. Let’s get right into it! I call this:
“This Side of Heaven “
What You Will Need
Alcohol:
For the rum in this hot buttered rum recipe I chose to go with Mount Gay Barbados Rum – Black Barrel. This rum has such a warm taste with notes of pepper, vanilla, and toffee. This Mount Gay is also aged in charred bourbon casks. I feel like I can definitely taste the bourbon a bit in this rum which I love. It almost gives me the same sort of vibe as a hot toddy in a way but with more spice and smoothness. I picked up my bottle at Total Wine and More! This bottle can be a bit pricey, so another great rum alternative would be Plantation Original Dark Rum.
Other Ingredients:
Now I will show you how to make the base for this delicious hot buttered rum recipe! I was so excited with this mixture because I didn’t know how it would turn out or how long it would hold for. I was able to keep this mixture fresh in the fridge for up to a full week!
Below are all of the ingredients for a batch.
- 2 ripe peeled and diced Fuyu Persimmons
- Juice of 1/2 a Meyer Lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of Ground Cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
- 3 tablespoons of Melted Salted Butter
Add all of the ingredients into a blender and mix until smooth! My blender is a Ninja Blender. I love this thing and use it for smoothies, dressings, and all sorts of recipes all the time! You can check one out just like mine RIGHT HERE.
Store in an air tight container in the fridge if you have any extra. Enjoy!
To add a little sweetness and balance out the rum and lemon juice we will be making a Cinnamon and Star Anise Simple Syrup! Simple syrup is more than simple to whip up! Adding in flavors such as fresh cinnamon and star anise is VERY easy as well.
Simple syrups can range in sweetness, but for this recipe we will be keeping the ratio very simple at 1:1. This means one part hot water, to one part white sugar. Make as little or as much as you want! Once the simple syrup is made you can keep it in your fridge for up to a month!
- In a pot on the stove add in desired amount of water.
- Once the water is at a slight boil, turn down the heat a bit and add in equal parts white sugar.
- Stir mixture slowly until all the sugar is dissolved and you have a syrup like consistency.
- Add in sticks of cinnamon and star anise.
- Keep stirring mixture for a minute or two and then take off of the heat.
- Let mixture sit for 30 minutes to an hour with cinnamon sticks and star anise steeping.
- Once syrup has sit and has cooled, strain it into a container of choice and keep in fridge!
If you have any extra syrup left over you can also try out the Thai Old Fashioned! This recipe uses the same exact delicious simple syrup!
Bar Supplies:
First bar tool you will want to have for this hot buttered rum recipe is a jigger! A great cocktail is balanced, consistent, and has a beautiful presentation. You can attain all of that by using a jigger! A jigger is how you measure the liquid ingredients going into your cocktail. The jigger that I have shown above is double sided and ranges from 1/4th oz to 2 oz. I love this jigger and never build without it! You can check one out just like mine right HERE!
If you’re looking for a simplified beginner jigger I have just the one for you. It only has one side, very clear measurement lines, and a little pour spout! I used this when I was just starting out and it really helped me gain confidence behind the bar. I will attach the exact jigger I used to use right HERE!
Since the base for this hot buttered rum recipe is more on the thick side, I like to thoroughly mix it with hot water using a Milk Frother! I usually only use this tool for coffee, but its come in handy if I need to give something a thorough mix, or make a quick whip! It’s definitely a great tool to have in general and it mixes this cocktail PERFECTLY. You can check one out identical to mine RIGHT HERE!
Lastly you will need a Grater for the garnish! We will be garnishing this cocktail by grating a cinnamon stick over the top. This will release all the aromas in the cinnamon and pull you in for your first warm sip of sweet nectar. I will attach a great microplane grater to check out RIGHT HERE!
I do recommend that if you are starting to create multiple cocktails at home, you should invest in your own personal Bartending Kit. Most come with everything you will need as a beginner while others provide several items for more complex creations. I will put links to both a beginners set, and a more advanced set on Amazon below!
