This post will show you how to make the perfect Aquarius season cocktail!
This year I will be making a cocktail for each zodiac sign! Starting off with one of my favorites, we have the Aquarius.
I have never not had a great time with an Aquarius. They are funky, fun, clever, spontaneous, loyal, and hilarious. Some of my greatest friends are part of the Aquarius crew!
This Aquarius cocktail will highlight blueberries, lemons, pomegranate, vanilla, bubbles and more! This is an original Sweet Recipe of mine that I wanted to make a bit quirky and different. To all of my Aquarius’s and Aquarius lovers out there, this one is for you! Let’s get right into it.
“Aquarius”
What You Will Need
Alchohol:
For the base of this Aquarius cocktail I chose to go with vodka! I love using Ketel One when I am mixing cocktails. It’s light, slightly peppery, and blends really well with fruity flavors. This is a really easily accessible vodka and can be found at almost any grocery or liquor store! Ketel one is a great vodka to have on deck at your home bar.
We will top this Aquarius cocktail with some fresh and crisp bubbles! I chose to top this cocktail with Torresella Prosecco. This specific bottle is extra dry and crisp with aromatic notes. It is perfect to add on top of this fruity, funky drink! You can find this bottle at select liquor stores, or sometimes at Walmart! If you cannot find this bottle, a great replacement would be La Vostra Prosecco. You can find that bottle at Total Wine and More.
Citrus and Other Fresh Ingredients:
One of the first ingredients we will be using is Fresh Lemon Juice! This will bring a little acidity to the drink and give it a nice little pop in flavor. Over at Sweet Nectar we ALWAYS use fresh citrus! Trust me, once you taste the difference, you’ll never look back. As you can see in the photo above I am using my hand-pressed stainless steel citrus juicer. This thing might be one of my favorite tools that I own. It allows me to quickly make individual drinks on the fly, it has a little pour spout, and it’s so easy to squeeze. You can check one out identical to mine RIGHT HERE!
Next you will be needing some blueberries! While I did have the option to muddle them, I chose to make them into more of a paste. I dumped a whole package of blueberries into my Ninja Blender and blended until smooth! This gave me a thick paste that I was able to pour into my jigger for measurements. I don’t think this paste would hold for longer than a day so I recommend just making as much as you need. You can check out the exact Ninja Blender that I have RIGHT HERE! I usually use it for juicing larger fruit such as watermelon and pineapple for some fun summer cocktails!
To give this Aquarius cocktail another tart and flavorful punch, we will be using Pom Juice! This brand Pom is so great because it’s 100% pomegranate juice and saves you a lot of hard work from extracting all of the juice from fresh pomegranates. What’s blueberry without a little punch of pomegranate right? These flavors will pair beautifully with the special simple syrup we will be making in the next step. Pom juice is available at almost all grocery stores! It is usually hiding near the produce fridges so keep your eyes peeled.
To keep the funky vibes going for this Aquarius cocktail I wanted to give the simple syrup a little pop of flavor. We will be using a Vanilla Simple Syrup! Flavoring simple syrups has been one of my favorite things to do recently and let me tell you this is a great syrup to have on deck! Specifically in this cocktail, you will find that blueberries pair wonderfully with vanilla!
Simple syrup is beyond easy to make. We will keep the ratio nice and simple at 1:1. This means equal parts water to white sugar. Your syrup will stay good in the fridge for up to a month! So remember to label and date all bottles you will be sticking in the fridge to make sure you’re always serving up the freshest product. I love using this set of bottles and labels from amazon. They look amazing in my home bar and keep everything nice and in order!
Vanilla Simple Syrup:
- In a pot on the stove add desired amount of water
- Turn on heat and add in the same amount of white sugar, stir mixture periodically
- Once water comes to a slight boil drop in a couple pieces of fresh vanilla bean ( for my batch I used 2 1/2 vanilla bean sticks for 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar)
- Reduce the heat and continue to stir
- Once all of the sugar is dissolved and you have a nice syrup like consistency you can remove from the heat
- Let the syrup sit and rest for about 30 minutes to an hour
- This allows the vanilla to really steep in the syrup and add flavor
- Strain syrup in a glass container, label, and store in the fridge for up to a month!
Bar Supplies:
The main component you will need for this Aquarius cocktail is a shaker. I usually use a Boston shaker when building my cocktails, but recently for guests and for filming I have been using a Glass Cobbler Shaker! I love the look of this shaker and the ease of the pour. This particular cocktail has a built in strainer! When you shake a cocktail you are diluting it and building it in volume at the same time! This is a crucial step for most drink builds. If you want to check out the glass shaker that I used you can do so right HERE!
Since this cocktail has fresh blended blueberries in it, it will need to be strained twice. This ensures the cocktail goes through two straining devices and removes any pulp or larger pieces of fruit. The second strainer you will want to use is called a Fine Mesh Strainer, and this process is called Double Straining. You can check out a fine mesh strainer just like mine RIGHT HERE!
Next up is a major bar essential. You will need a Bar Jigger! A great cocktail is balanced, beautiful, and consistent. You can attain this easily by using a jigger. Jiggers measure out the ingredients that will be going into your creation. My jigger shown above ranges from 1/4 oz to 2oz. There are a range of different sizes out there, but this is one is one of the most standard to have on deck when you are mixing drinks. You can check out a bar jigger for yourself RIGHT HERE!
I do have to say that when I was a beginner and just learning skills, I used a jigger that was much more simplified. It had only one side, a pour spout, and very clear measurement lines. This jigger helped me become more comfortable with my pours and built my overall confidence in creating cocktails. I will link the exact beginner jigger I used RIGHT HERE for anyone just getting started!
This delicious Aquarius cocktail is strained over crushed ice! If you don’t have a crushed ice machine at home, you will want to use a Lewis Bag and Mallet. You put full ice cubes into the bag, crush with the mallet, and scoop out crushed ice using a stainless steel ice scoop. The bag is made of canvas which keeps the ice cool and crisp. I was lucky enough to get a set here in San Diego at a local bartending shop, but you can actually get your own FULL set that comes with all the supplies RIGHT HERE on Amazon. It comes with a scoop and everything! The bag is reusable and holds the crushed ice in a presentable way for your at home bar.
If you would prefer to use an ice mold for your crushed ice I will link one on Amazon for you RIGHT HERE!
Garnish:
I really wanted to give this Aquarius cocktail a cool and unique garnish. I tried something I have never tried before and made a light layer of Blueberry Prosecco Foam!
The photo above was taken about 10 minutes after making the cocktail. As you can see, the foam is holding and giving a funky and fun top layer to this Aquarius cocktail! This foam is fairly simple to make:
- 50 ML blended blueberries
- 80 ML prosecco
- 2 Grams Soy Lecithin
In a medium sized bowl you will want to add all of the ingredients listed above. Then combine ingredients using an Immersion Blender. While you are blending, you will start to see foam gathering on top ! Use a Julep Strainer to scoop up the foam and lay it gently on top of your cocktail! Layer as much as you would like on top for more volume. Have fun with it!
I do recommend that if you are starting to create multiple cocktails at home, you should invest in your own personal Bartending Kit. Most come with everything you will need as a beginner while others provide several items for more complex creations. I will put links to both a beginners set, and a more advanced set on Amazon below!
